About the Presenter

Jeanmarie Jacoby

Over 35 years experience in the field of special education. Jeanmarie earned her master’s degree in special education and holds a graduate certificate in Assistive Technology Applications. Originally from the Boston area, Jeanmarie has had several roles ranging from teacher, AT Consultant, and Special Education Director to Adjunct Instructor at two Arizona universities. Jeanmarie has provided training and workshops to parents and teachers nationally and internationally. Currently, Jeanmarie is an educational consultant where she supports educators in implementing literacy instruction in their classrooms.

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D.​

Karen A. Erickson, Ph.D. is Director of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill. Her focus is on understanding the best ways to assess and teach reading and writing to children with the most severe disabilities. As a special education teacher, Dr. Erickson has worked to support students with a range of disabilities in a variety of classroom settings, particularly students who do not use speech as their primary means of communication.
