To support literacy instruction for nonspeaking learners, educators need clear routines, engaging strategies, and tools that fit real classrooms. This 45-minute session with Kelly focuses on practical tools and strategies that help teachers and related service providers provide literacy instruction to provide engaging and research-based literacy instruction to AAC users.

Examples of Tools for Literacy Instruction with AAC Systems

Kelly shares classroom-ready techniques that connect phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension for AAC users. Participants will see examples from Readtopia, ReadtopiaGO, and several AAC systems, with a focus on how these programs build foundational reading skills.

The session shows how Readtopia’s thematic units teach key vocabulary, support comprehension, and guide writing tasks while embedding AAC use. Kelly will also show simple ways to collect data on AAC use during Readtopia lessons so teams can track growth over time.

Demonstration of Supports to Encourage Communication and Engagement

A special part of the webinar highlights Readtopia’s AAC features, including smart charts with built-in vocabulary. These supports help students share ideas, join discussions, and take part in shared reading. Kelly will model language strategies that encourage communication during literacy lessons and will demonstrate how to use Readtopia images and Google Slides to support expressive language for nonspeaking learners.
