Comprehensive Literacy for All (CLFA) is a research-based framework that integrates communication, language, reading, and writing into meaningful daily instruction. Designed to support every learner, including students with significant cognitive disabilities, CLFA helps schools create literacy-rich classrooms where all students have opportunities to become readers and writers.
What does comprehensive literacy consist of?
Comprehensive literacy instruction weaves together six essential components that support every learner across all modes of communication and all stages of literacy development.
Shared Reading
Shared Reading is an interactive instructional practice where teachers and students read meaningful texts together. Research shows it builds language, vocabulary, comprehension, print awareness, and concepts about reading while giving every learner access to rich, grade-level literacy experiences.
Self Selected Reading
Self Selected Reading gives students regular opportunities to choose and read books that match their interests and abilities. Research shows it increases reading engagement, motivation, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading stamina while fostering lifelong reading habits.
Predictable Chart Writing
Predictable Chart Writing is a shared literacy practice where teachers and students create meaningful text together from shared experiences. Research shows it develops concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, phonics, word recognition, language, and early reading skills while making literacy meaningful and accessible for every learner.
Independent Writing
Independent Writing gives students daily opportunities to express ideas through drawing, letters, words, symbols, or text at their current level. Research shows regular writing strengthens communication, phonics, spelling, reading, language, and overall literacy development while fostering independence and confidence.
Word Study
Word Study provides explicit instruction in phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, phonics, decoding, spelling, and word recognition. Research shows these foundational literacy skills are essential for developing accurate, fluent readers and supporting long-term reading and writing success.
Communication Throughout the Day
Communication Throughout the Day ensures every learner has frequent opportunities to communicate using speech, AAC, gestures, or other modalities. Research shows that strong communication and language skills are foundational to vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and lifelong literacy.
Rooted in the Science of Reading
Comprehensive Literacy for All aligns with the Science of Reading, integrating key components shown to be essential for skilled reading and writing.
